Meeting with a counselor provides you with the opportunity to talk about your concerns in a private and confidential setting. Still, some people feel apprehensive, perhaps wondering if their problems really justify getting "professional help" or if they will be embarrassed talking about personal problems with someone they don't know. But the reason seeing a counselor has become so commonplace is that many people have found therapy not only helpful but also safe, supportive, and a great way to grow.
Many people seek professional help when their family is in distress. Others when their primary relationship is in need of help. And others when they are faced with loss or trauma or perhaps emotional or mental health symptoms that are unwanted or painful.
Counselors are trained in a wide variety of areas including family systems, human development, and mental health. They also use what they've learned through just living and relating in their interactions as therapists. Central to the counseling process is supporting you in your current struggle, defining issues, clarifying what treatment looks like and then establishing reasonable goals to be accomplished in an agreed upon time frame. You will want to find a counselor that works for you. Most are caring but personalities vary widely and levels of competence are often determined by the counselors specialization, years of experience, education and quality of self care. My hope is you are able to get the help you need. Feel free to call if you have questions.
